WEL Companies integrates digital freight brokerage and carrier operations

US transportation and logistics provider WEL Companies has integrated Descartes Systems Group’s transportation management system (TMS) with CARRIER1 Vault to streamline freight brokerage operations and improve the exchange of shipment information between brokers, carriers and drivers.

The Wisconsin-based company is using the combined technology to manage shipments transported by its own trucks as well as freight assigned to external trucking companies within its for-hire carrier network. The integration connects freight brokerage workflows with carrier communications, shipment tracking and document management through a shared operational process.

According to Descartes, the solution allows WEL’s freight brokers to manage the shipment lifecycle without leaving their existing TMS, while information from carriers and drivers is transferred back into the corresponding shipment records.

The implementation is intended to reduce manual administrative work and improve the coordination of transportation activities involving multiple carriers.

Connecting freight brokers with carriers and drivers

Descartes’ cloud-based broker TMS supports several stages of freight brokerage operations, including order entry, load coverage, carrier acceptance, dispatching and communication with transportation providers.

Through its integration with CARRIER1 Vault, these capabilities are extended to the carriers and drivers responsible for moving shipments.

The combined solution supports digital load tendering, shipment tracking, operational communication and the exchange of transportation documents. Carrier assignments, driver and equipment information, shipment status updates and delivery documentation can be linked directly to the relevant load within the Descartes platform.

Documents exchanged through the system include rate confirmations, bills of lading and proof of delivery, helping brokers maintain shipment records without relying on separate communication channels.

The integration also provides carrier, driver and equipment verification capabilities, supporting the management of transportation partners across WEL’s network.

By connecting these processes, the companies aim to reduce the need for brokers to collect information manually through emails, spreadsheets and telephone calls.

“The Descartes and CARRIER1 collaboration lets WEL automate communication and shipment data across our brokerage, our assets, and our for-hire carrier network, without our brokers ever leaving their TMS,” said Eric Lenze, Executive Vice President at WEL Companies.

Lenze added that the integration supports a faster shipment lifecycle and an improved customer experience.

Digital workflows across the shipment lifecycle

A central feature of the implementation is the ability to maintain a continuous flow of information between freight brokers and the carriers handling their shipments.

Rather than requiring brokers to switch between different systems to obtain updates, CARRIER1 Vault connects carrier and driver activities with the shipment management processes already used by WEL.

This includes transmitting information when a load is assigned, updating shipment status during transportation and returning the necessary documentation once delivery activities have been completed.

The approach is designed to improve operational visibility while reducing repetitive data entry and administrative coordination.

“Connecting Vault with Descartes’ TMS brings the broker, carrier and driver into the same flow of information,” said Travis Rhyan, CEO of CARRIER1.

Rhyan explained that the integration allows brokers to remain within the Descartes environment while carriers receive the information required to move loads and return operational updates through the connected workflow.

The system also supports WEL’s operating model, which combines company-owned transportation assets with freight brokerage services involving third-party carriers.

Descartes expands integrated transportation capabilities

For Descartes, the implementation demonstrates its approach to extending transportation management capabilities through integrations with specialised technology providers.

The company positions its broker TMS as the central platform for managing freight operations, while connected applications provide additional functions for communication, verification and document exchange.

Andrew Wimer, Associate General Manager at Descartes, said the collaboration with CARRIER1 allows more stages of the shipment lifecycle to be connected directly to the TMS.

According to Wimer, the objective is to reduce the time brokers spend collecting operational information and allow them to concentrate on managing exceptions and supporting customers.

The announcement did not provide quantified results relating to administrative cost savings, productivity improvements or reductions in shipment processing times.

The implementation nevertheless establishes an integrated digital workflow for WEL Companies, connecting its freight brokerage activities, own-fleet operations and external carrier network through the Descartes and CARRIER1 platforms.
