Wabtec signs long-term locomotive support agreement with Transnet

Wabtec has finalised a long-term Material and Technical Support Agreement (MTSA) with Transnet Engineering, valued at approximately US$390 million, to improve the reliability and availability of freight locomotives operating across South Africa’s rail network.

The agreement covers Transnet’s Class D43 and D44 locomotives, which serve important freight corridors transporting export commodities, containers and general cargo. The arrangement is intended to strengthen locomotive maintenance capabilities and support efforts to improve the performance of South Africa’s freight transport system.

Under the contract, Wabtec will supply locomotive components, technical expertise and predictive maintenance solutions. These will include its Expert-on-Alert digital condition monitoring platform, which is designed to support equipment monitoring and help maintenance teams identify potential technical issues.

The agreement is expected to improve maintenance turnaround times, support locomotive lifecycle management and increase fleet availability. These improvements are particularly relevant to Transnet’s efforts to restore freight rail performance and strengthen the movement of goods between industrial centres, inland logistics hubs and export gateways.

“This agreement supports our Reinvent for Growth strategy and represents an important step in improving the performance of our locomotive fleet,” said Bessie Mabunda, Chief Executive of Transnet Engineering.

Mabunda highlighted the importance of the D43 and D44 locomotives to South Africa’s freight corridors, noting that improved reliability would support freight recovery, service delivery and the country’s logistics competitiveness.

The partnership will also extend beyond the supply of maintenance materials and technical support. Wabtec and Transnet Engineering plan to collaborate on knowledge transfer, technical development and localisation initiatives aimed at strengthening South Africa’s domestic rail industry capabilities.

“Transnet is making strategic investments to strengthen the reliability, efficiency and long-term performance of its rail network,” said Sameer Gaur, President of Global Freight Services at Wabtec.

The agreement reflects the importance of locomotive availability to South Africa’s wider logistics network, where rail transport supports the movement of bulk commodities, containerised cargo and industrial goods. More reliable freight operations could help improve cargo flows and reduce operational disruption across the country’s supply chains.

The companies did not disclose the precise duration of the agreement, the number of locomotives covered or a detailed implementation timetable.
