Wallenius Wilhelmsen secures new shipping contract with Asian automaker

Wallenius Wilhelmsen has signed a three-year shipping agreement with a major Asian automotive manufacturer, strengthening its contract portfolio following a series of commercial agreements announced in recent days.

The contract is valued at approximately US$700 million over its initial three-year term, with freight rates aligned with current market levels. It also includes an option to extend the arrangement for another two years, subject to mutual agreement between the parties.

The Oslo-listed Ro-Ro shipping and vehicle logistics group has not disclosed the identity of the automotive manufacturer, the contracted cargo volumes or the specific trade lanes covered by the agreement.

John Felitto, Chief Customer Officer at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said the agreement builds on an established commercial relationship and provides a stronger foundation for supporting the customer’s international transportation requirements.

“The significant long-term commitment strengthens our position as a key logistics partner and gives us an even stronger foundation for providing end-to-end solutions across ocean, logistics, and supply chain services,” said John Felitto, Chief Customer Officer at Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

Agreement includes multi-fuel provisions

The contract incorporates a multi-fuel approach across the covered trade lanes, intended to accommodate the gradual introduction of alternative and lower-emission fuels.

The arrangement provides flexibility for future fuel transitions, although Wallenius Wilhelmsen has not specified which fuels will be used, the proportion of voyages expected to involve alternative fuels or any associated emissions reduction targets.

The company also confirmed that the agreed freight rates are consistent with prevailing market levels, without disclosing individual rate structures or minimum annual shipping volumes.

Recent agreements strengthen contract portfolio

The latest contract follows another major commercial announcement on 29 October, when Wallenius Wilhelmsen secured two three-year agreements with a leading equipment manufacturer covering shipping and logistics services.

Those agreements have a combined value exceeding US$1 billion, comprising approximately US$950 million in ocean transportation and close to US$100 million in logistics services.

Together, the two sets of announcements represent more than US$1.7 billion in initial contractual value, although they involve separate customers and commercial arrangements.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen operates a global Ro-Ro shipping and vehicle logistics network, with approximately 130 vessels serving 15 trade routes across six continents. Its operations also include inland distribution facilities, vehicle processing centres and marine terminals.

The latest agreements add to the company’s contracted shipping business while supporting its position in international automotive and equipment transportation.
