Port of Gävle secures long-term terminal agreement with VAROPreem

The Port of Gävle in Sweden has signed a new 25-year land lease agreement with VAROPreem Sverige, securing the continued operation of an established fuel storage and distribution terminal serving industrial and commercial customers across central Sweden.
The agreement covers the long-term use of port land, facilities and infrastructure by VAROPreem, extending a commercial relationship that dates back to the early 1960s. It provides a framework for continued terminal operations and potential future development as demand for conventional and renewable fuels evolves.
According to VAROPreem, the Gävle facility has a storage capacity of approximately 260,000 cubic metres and forms part of the company’s Swedish terminal network. Its location provides access to maritime, rail and road infrastructure, supporting fuel distribution across a broad geographical area.
The terminal serves customers in the Gävle and Dalarna regions, with distribution connections extending further north and into parts of the Stockholm region.
Long-term agreement supports terminal operations
The new lease establishes the conditions for VAROPreem’s continued use of existing port infrastructure over the next 25 years, providing greater certainty for operational planning and future investment decisions.
Fredrik Svanbom, CEO of Gävle Hamn AB, said the agreement strengthens the established cooperation between the port authority and one of its long-standing terminal operators.
The arrangement also supports the port’s planning for infrastructure maintenance, safety and future operational requirements.
For VAROPreem, the location remains important because of its connections to regional industrial customers and its ability to distribute products through several transport modes.
Sofia Sundström, Vice President Terminals at VAROPreem, said the agreement provides a longer-term basis for developing the company’s operations in Gävle as the energy market changes.
Renewable fuels offer potential for future development
The companies identified renewable fuels as one area that could support further development of terminal activities.
VAROPreem already distributes conventional and renewable fuel products through its wider network, while the Gävle terminal’s existing infrastructure provides opportunities to adapt to changing customer requirements.
However, the announcement does not include a specific expansion project, additional storage capacity or an investment amount associated with renewable fuels.
The agreement also does not represent the construction of a new terminal, but rather the continuation of operations at an established port facility under a long-term lease.
The Port of Gävle is an important logistics gateway on Sweden’s east coast, supporting container, bulk, liquid cargo and intermodal transport operations.
The latest agreement reinforces the port’s role in regional fuel supply and industrial logistics while providing a framework for future cooperation with VAROPreem.
