Seafarer killed following explosion aboard Velos Sapphire in Persian Gulf

A crew member has died following an explosion aboard the Greek-managed product tanker Velos Sapphire in the Persian Gulf, in another serious maritime security incident affecting commercial shipping in the Middle East.
The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, managed by Velos Tankers Ltd., was reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile on November 5, 2026, while operating approximately 50 nautical miles north of Qatar. The explosion occurred near the vessel’s port-side stern area and resulted in a fire on board.
Velos Tankers subsequently confirmed the death of one crew member. No additional injuries were reported among the remaining personnel, while the circumstances surrounding the incident and the origin of the suspected projectile remain under investigation.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) also recorded the incident, initially identifying one missing seafarer. The subsequent confirmation of the fatality highlights the human consequences of the security threats facing merchant vessels operating in the region.
Fire extinguished as vessel heads towards Bahrain
Following the explosion, the fire aboard Velos Sapphire was extinguished, with no marine pollution reported. The tanker subsequently proceeded towards Khalifa Bin Salman Port in Bahrain.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of continuing instability in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waterways, where security threats have complicated commercial shipping operations and increased concerns over the safety of seafarers.
Although the explosion is believed to have involved an unidentified projectile, no responsibility for the incident has been established. The available information does not confirm the weapon used, its origin or the party responsible.
The attack adds to the operational and security challenges facing tanker operators in the Middle East, particularly as shipping companies assess vessel movements, crew safety and exposure to risks along major energy transportation routes.
The circumstances of the fatal incident remain under investigation, with further information expected to clarify the sequence of events and the cause of the explosion.
