Vopak receives NSW government endorsement for Port Botany fuel expansion

Vopak Terminals Australia has received an endorsement from the New South Wales (NSW) Government for its proposed aviation fuel infrastructure expansion at Port Botany, as part of efforts to strengthen fuel storage capacity and supply chain resilience.

The project would add approximately 120,000 cubic metres of storage capacity through the development of new tanks and pipeline connections. The proposed infrastructure is also designed to accommodate sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), supporting the storage and distribution of alternative aviation fuels.

The expansion has been identified by the NSW Government as a project contributing to the state’s fuel security objectives. However, the development remains subject to a Final Investment Decision (FID), as well as the necessary planning conditions and regulatory approvals.

Government endorsement to support project development

The endorsement was granted through the NSW Government’s Investment Delivery Authority (IDA), which will provide non-financial assistance aimed at improving coordination between government agencies and addressing potential barriers to project delivery.

According to Vopak, the proposed expansion would increase storage capacity at its independent, open-access terminal, allowing the facility to accommodate additional aviation fuel volumes while supporting supply chain resilience.

The company also intends to incorporate infrastructure capable of handling sustainable aviation fuels, although the announcement does not specify the proportion of the additional capacity that would be allocated to SAF.

Mats de Groot, Managing Director of Vopak Terminals Australia, said the proposed investment would address fuel security requirements while preparing the facility for changes in aviation fuel demand.

“By expanding as an independent, open-access facility, this project will not only address fuel security issues, but boost market competition to the benefit of Australian consumers,” de Groot said.

The proposed development has not yet received a final investment commitment. Its implementation will depend on Vopak’s investment decision and the completion of the applicable regulatory and planning processes.
