LD Armateurs expands subsea cable fleet with three vessel acquisitions

LD Armateurs (LDA) has acquired three Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) currently under construction, with plans to convert them into specialised cable-laying vessels for the installation and repair of subsea telecommunications cables. The investment marks an expansion of the French shipping group’s activities in maritime infrastructure services as demand for subsea connectivity continues to develop.
The three vessels are scheduled for delivery during the second quarter of 2027, after which they will be transferred to a conversion shipyard for the installation of dedicated cable-handling and operational equipment. LDA expects the converted vessels to enter service during the first quarter of 2028, adding capacity to its subsea telecommunications operations.
Each vessel will have a cable-carrying capacity of 2,800 tonnes and will be equipped to undertake installation, maintenance and repair work on subsea telecommunications networks. The vessels are also intended to support more complex cable projects requiring operational flexibility and rapid deployment capabilities.
The converted vessels will feature hybrid-electric propulsion systems, designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions during operations. LDA has not disclosed the acquisition value, the shipyard responsible for the original construction or the facility where the conversions will take place.
Expanding subsea infrastructure capabilities
The investment follows 25 years of LDA involvement in the installation and repair of subsea telecommunications cables for its customers. According to the company, the acquisition is intended to address increasing requirements for digital infrastructure while responding to capacity limitations and the ageing profile of the existing global cable-laying fleet.
“Building on 25 years of experience in the installation and repair of subsea telecommunications cables on behalf of our clients, LDA has decided to invest in its own fleet of next-generation cable vessels,” said Samira Draoua, Chief Executive Officer of LD Armateurs.
The move also reflects the strategic importance of subsea telecommunications networks, which carry international data traffic and require specialised vessels for installation, inspection and repair. By investing in its own cable-laying tonnage, LDA is expanding its directly controlled vessel capacity alongside its established ship management and operational activities.
The company describes itself as the manager of the world’s largest fleet of cable-laying vessels serving the telecommunications industry, with experience spanning vessel design, construction, conversion and subsea cable operations.
New training initiative to support fleet growth
Alongside the vessel acquisitions, LD Armateurs announced the launch of the LDA Academy, a training initiative intended to support recruitment and professional development across its maritime operations. The programme will focus on developing the specialist skills required for subsea cable work while facilitating career mobility between the group’s business activities.
The initiative will also support the introduction of three new methanol- and wind-powered RoRo vessels, which form part of LDA’s wider fleet development programme. The Academy is intended to provide a structured framework for transferring operational expertise to future crews as the company expands its specialised shipping activities.
“This investment, both technological and human, marks an important step in the Group’s growth strategy by strengthening its position across the entire subsea telecommunications cable systems value chain,” said Draoua.
The planned entry into service of the three converted vessels in 2028 will represent a further expansion of LDA’s subsea cable capabilities, combining additional vessel capacity with investment in specialist maritime personnel.
