Chouest Group expands Canadian operations with Horizon Maritime acquisition

The Chouest Group has announced the acquisition of Canadian marine and offshore services provider Horizon Maritime as part of a strategic partnership with the company’s founders, expanding its operational presence across Canada’s East and West Coasts and the Arctic.

The transaction involves the acquisition of Horizon Maritime from CFFI and its lender HPS. The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement or provide further details regarding the ownership structure.

The partnership brings together Horizon Maritime’s experience in harsh-environment marine operations and Chouest Group’s international capabilities in marine transportation, subsea services, specialized engineering and advanced technology.

Expansion across Canada’s marine sector

Horizon Maritime operates across Canada’s three coastlines and provides specialized services to offshore energy, Arctic and other marine sectors. The company has also established partnerships with Indigenous communities and developed long-standing relationships with customers operating in challenging maritime environments.

Through the partnership, Horizon Maritime will gain access to Chouest Group’s wider fleet resources, technical expertise and integrated service offerings. The companies intend to use these capabilities to support further expansion across Canada’s marine and offshore markets.

The Chouest Group operates internationally across vessel ownership and operations, shipbuilding, subsea services, engineering and advanced technology manufacturing. Its activities include offshore support operations and specialized marine infrastructure projects.

Dino Chouest of the Chouest Group said the combination of the group’s global capabilities and Horizon Maritime’s established Canadian presence would create opportunities for further business development across the region.

Horizon Maritime to retain existing leadership

Horizon Maritime will continue operating under its existing management team and leadership structure, maintaining continuity across customer relationships, ongoing projects and crewing operations.

Steve Widmeyer will remain Chief Executive Officer, while Widmeyer and company co-founder Sean Leet will join the Board of Directors.

The companies also emphasized their commitment to maintaining Horizon Maritime’s operational standards and expanding Indigenous participation in Canada’s marine economy.

Leet said the partnership would allow Horizon Maritime to broaden its service offering while strengthening its capacity to support a wider range of maritime activities, including dual-use operations.

The acquisition establishes a larger operating platform for the Chouest Group in Canada while providing Horizon Maritime with access to additional resources for its next phase of development.
