NYK raises annual earnings outlook on stronger shipping market conditions

NYK Line has revised upward its consolidated earnings forecasts for the financial year ending 31 March 2027, citing stronger-than-expected container freight rates and favourable market conditions across its dry bulk and energy businesses.

The Japanese shipping group announced the revision on 29 October 2026, updating the projections previously released on 5 August. The company expects improved earnings from its equity-accounted investment in Ocean Network Express (ONE), as container shipping market conditions have exceeded its earlier assumptions.

Under the revised full-year forecast, NYK expects consolidated revenue of ¥3 trillion, compared with its previous projection of ¥2.881 trillion. Operating profit is now forecast at ¥210 billion, an increase of 13.5% from the earlier estimate of ¥185 billion.

The company has also raised its recurring profit forecast by 34% to ¥335 billion, from ¥250 billion previously. Profit attributable to owners of the parent is projected to reach ¥330 billion, representing a 37.5% increase from the previous forecast of ¥240 billion.

The revision also applies to the first half of the financial year, covering the six months ended 30 September 2026. NYK now expects revenue of ¥1.505 trillion, up 4.5% from its earlier estimate, while operating profit is forecast at ¥114 billion, an increase of 11.8%.

First-half recurring profit is projected at ¥213 billion, compared with the previous forecast of ¥160 billion. Profit attributable to owners of the parent is expected to reach ¥203 billion, up 31% from the earlier projection of ¥155 billion.

NYK attributed the improved outlook partly to the performance expected from ONE, in which it holds an equity interest. The company indicated that container freight market conditions have remained above the levels assumed when its previous forecasts were prepared.

The group also cited firm market conditions in its dry bulk and energy operations as contributing factors behind the upward revision.

The updated forecasts are based on an assumed average exchange rate of ¥157.98 per US dollar and an average bunker fuel price of US$802.32 per metric tonne for the full financial year.

The figures represent revised management forecasts rather than final reported financial results. NYK is scheduled to publish its financial results for the six months ended September 2026 on 5 November.
