Port of Tauranga reports decline in cargo and container volumes

Port of Tauranga recorded a decline in cargo and container volumes during the first quarter of its 2027 financial year, as weaker log exports and capacity constraints affected operations at New Zealand’s largest port.
Total trade volumes reached 6.25 million tonnes in the three months ended 30 September 2026, representing a 4.8% decrease compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. Container throughput also declined, falling 2.6% to 311,000 TEU.
According to the port operator, much of the decrease in overall cargo volumes was attributable to lower log exports, with New Zealand’s forestry industry facing pressure from elevated fuel prices.
Port of Tauranga Chief Executive Leonard Sampson told shareholders at the company’s Annual Meeting that trading conditions remained uncertain. He also identified a shortage of spare berth capacity at the container terminal as an ongoing operational constraint.
Despite the reduction in cargo volumes, the company maintained its underlying earnings outlook for the full financial year.
Port of Tauranga maintains earnings guidance
Based on first-quarter trading volumes, Port of Tauranga expects underlying Group Net Profit After Tax to range between NZ$160 million and NZ$175 million for the financial year ending 30 June 2027.
The forecast remains subject to trading conditions and unforeseen developments that could affect the company’s operations and financial performance.
Underlying net profit is a non-GAAP financial measure that excludes certain one-off or non-core items, including asset revaluations, impairments and gains or losses from major asset disposals.
Sampson said the company remained confident in its longer-term prospects despite the decline in cargo activity, citing its infrastructure, diversified revenue streams and customer relationships.
The first-quarter update highlights the continuing pressure on log export volumes and the operational limitations affecting the port’s container terminal, while the company maintains its full-year earnings expectations.
