Rhenus and Merck introduce smart picking technology at Strasbourg warehouse

Rhenus has introduced a smart order-picking solution for Merck at its dedicated logistics hub in Strasbourg, France, as the two companies expand their cooperation on warehouse automation and operational efficiency.
Developed in partnership with logistics technology specialist Signature One, the system combines automated weight verification, visual guidance and digital quality-control features to support order accuracy and improve warehouse processes.
The Strasbourg facility supports Merck’s operations in Molsheim and handles approximately 2,800 orders per day across three shifts. The new technology is designed to address the operational requirements of a high-volume warehouse serving the healthcare, life science and technology sectors.
Smart trolleys support warehouse accuracy
At the centre of the new solution is a smart picking trolley equipped with an onboard weighing system that automatically verifies the quantities and weights selected during order preparation.
The technology integrates up to 30 scales on a single trolley, alongside light-guided picking features that help operators identify and collect the required products. Onboard cameras also allow orders to be reviewed retrospectively when additional checks are necessary following customer requests.
The trolleys feature an ergonomic design and colour-coded configurations intended to support different operational requirements and improve the organisation of warehouse flows.
According to Rhenus, the system has been adopted by warehouse operators and is intended to strengthen process reliability while reducing the risk of picking errors.
The companies have not disclosed quantified improvements in picking speed, productivity or error rates following the deployment.
Further integration planned across logistics operations
The introduction of the smart picking system represents the latest development in the 16-year logistics partnership between Rhenus and Merck.
In 2025, the companies introduced a lower-carbon logistics shuttle using B100 renewable biodiesel between Merck’s Molsheim facility and the Rhenus hub in Strasbourg.
The latest project focuses on warehouse processes rather than transport operations, with further digital integration planned for the next stage.
Rhenus and Merck intend to connect the smart trolleys to an end-to-end order-preparation system covering activities from truck unloading through to final customer delivery.
The planned development includes connections with conveyor systems, on-demand packaging equipment and other warehouse management technologies, with the aim of improving coordination across the logistics operation.
While the smart picking solution is already deployed, these additional integrations remain part of the companies’ future development plans.
