Parallel Systems and Agility partner on autonomous freight rail expansion

US-based autonomous rail technology company Parallel Systems has entered into a strategic collaboration with Agility to explore the development and deployment of autonomous freight rail systems across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the wider Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, and other international markets.

Announced on 28 September 2026, the agreement covers potential cooperation in technology development, commercialisation, financing and deployment. The companies intend to combine Parallel Systems’ battery-electric rail technology with Agility’s logistics expertise, infrastructure development capabilities and regional business relationships.

The initial phase will focus on identifying suitable freight corridors and assessing commercially viable opportunities, particularly where autonomous rail could improve connections between ports, inland logistics facilities and regional distribution networks.

Autonomous rail technology targets shorter freight routes

Parallel Systems has developed an autonomous freight platform using battery-electric vehicles designed to operate on existing railway infrastructure.

The vehicles are designed to sort themselves and form groups for freight movements, while integrating with railway control and business systems. The technology is intended to support more frequent services on shorter routes and corridors with lower freight volumes.

According to Parallel Systems, its vehicles can transport intermodal containers for up to 500 miles on a single charge. The company sees potential applications in port shuttle operations, inland logistics connections and shorter intercity freight movements.

These applications could provide an alternative to certain road freight movements, although their commercial viability and operational performance will depend on the characteristics of individual routes and the required approvals.

“Parallel enables railroads to handle shorter, lower-density routes competitively, allowing shippers to use rail for short-haul freight that previously required trucks, making rail more competitive with trucking while reducing road congestion,” said Arun Gupta, Executive Chairman of Parallel Systems.

Gupta also identified the GCC and wider EMEA region as potential markets for the company’s technology.

GCC infrastructure projects form part of expansion plans

The collaboration comes as the companies identify opportunities associated with rail and port infrastructure development across the GCC.

Agility will contribute its regional market knowledge, infrastructure experience and relationships with stakeholders across the logistics and supply chain sectors.

The companies intend to assess where autonomous rail could support container movements between maritime gateways, inland facilities and other freight destinations.

“With major rail and port projects advancing across the GCC, now is the time to build technology into the region’s infrastructure and resilience plans,” said Tarek Sultan, Chairman of Agility.

Sultan pointed to potential applications linking Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea gateways with logistics networks, as well as opportunities associated with ports on the Gulf and Arabian Sea.

The companies will develop a roadmap covering regional adaptation, testing, regulatory approvals and other requirements necessary before any operational deployment.

No specific routes, project investments or commercial launch dates were confirmed in the announcement.

The agreement therefore establishes a framework for evaluating and developing autonomous freight rail opportunities rather than confirming the immediate introduction of services in the GCC or EMEA.
