Panama Canal opens new cruise season with more than 220 transits expected

The Panama Canal has opened its 2026–2027 cruise season, with more than 220 vessel transits scheduled between October and May, reflecting continued demand for itineraries connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Miracle inaugurated the season with a northbound transit through the Miraflores Locks, travelling from the Pacific towards the Atlantic as part of a 16-day repositioning voyage originating in Seattle, Washington.

The Panama Canal Authority expects activity from major cruise operators alongside smaller vessels serving specialised cruise markets.

Major cruise operators and first-time transits

Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruises are among the operators expected to include full or partial Panama Canal transits in their itineraries during the season.

Smaller vessels scheduled to visit include Le Bellot, Star Legend, National Geographic Quest and Wind Star.

Five cruise ships are expected to transit the waterway for the first time: L’Austral, Le Laperouse, Seven Seas Prestige, Spirit of Adventure and Explora III.

The canal authority also anticipates 39 Neopanamax cruise ship transits during the season. These will include Star Princess, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy, identified in the announcement among the largest vessels expected to use the waterway.

Cruise industry growth supports outlook

The Panama Canal Authority expects cruise traffic to perform favourably during the fiscal year, supported by expanding fleet capacity and passenger demand.

According to figures cited by the authority, global cruise passenger demand is projected to increase by 5% in 2027, while the worldwide cruise fleet is expected to grow by 16 vessels to reach 490 ships.

The canal remains an important connection for repositioning voyages and cruise itineraries linking North America, the Caribbean and the Pacific coast.

The 2026–2027 season is scheduled to continue through May 2027, with a combination of large cruise ships and smaller expedition-oriented vessels expected to transit the waterway.
