NYK Group establishes Silicon Valley office

NYK Group is opening a new office in Sunnyvale, California, in October 2026 to identify emerging technologies and develop business opportunities across the Americas.

The Silicon Valley branch will operate under NYK Group Americas Inc. (NGA), the Japanese shipping group’s regional headquarters for the Americas.

The office will focus on developments in artificial intelligence, digital technology, energy and decarbonisation, while exploring potential applications across NYK’s shipping and logistics businesses.

NYK Group targets technology partnerships

Through the new branch, NYK Group Americas plans to establish relationships with startups, venture capital firms, research institutions and established technology companies in Silicon Valley.

The company will assess potential technologies and business models through proof-of-concept projects, commercial partnerships and possible equity investments.

NYK said its existing fleet, logistics network and customer base could provide opportunities to test and commercialise technologies identified through the new office.

The branch will also support business development across the Americas, with a focus on identifying opportunities that could be applied to existing operations or developed into new business activities.

New office to support business development in the Americas

Yutaka Ikeda, Managing Executive Officer of NYK, Regional Head of the Americas and Chief Executive Officer of NYK Group Americas, said the new location would help the company identify technological developments at an earlier stage.

“By opening the Silicon Valley branch, we will be better positioned to identify these developments at an early stage and build relationships with startups, investors, research institutions, and other members of the local innovation ecosystem,” Ikeda said.

He added that NGA would serve as a starting point for business development across the Americas, combining locally identified opportunities with the group’s existing operations.

The Silicon Valley branch is scheduled to begin operations in October 2026. NYK has not disclosed any specific investments or partnerships associated with the opening.
