Kazakhstan Railways introduces Starlink connectivity across passenger trains

Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) has introduced a large-scale digital connectivity programme across its passenger rail network, equipping more than 1,500 carriages on 51 routes with Starlink satellite internet infrastructure.
The project, implemented through the national passenger rail operator, is designed to provide onboard connectivity and support digital services for more than 11 million passengers annually. Its implementation was presented at Nurly Zhol railway station in Astana, where train conductors joined the event remotely from operating services to demonstrate the onboard Wi-Fi connection.
The initiative forms part of a wider programme to modernize passenger rail services by integrating satellite communications, digital information systems and mobile applications.
Starlink expands onboard connectivity
The satellite internet infrastructure provides passengers with access to basic and premium connectivity services during their journeys.
Under the service model announced by KTZ, passengers will have access to a free basic internet package designed for text messaging through messaging applications. Paid packages will provide additional functionality, including the exchange of photographs, videos and voice messages, alongside other internet services.
The onboard infrastructure combines Wi-Fi networks, inter-carriage connections and centralized equipment management, with technical solutions adapted to different types of train formations.
The system is intended to provide connectivity across routes of varying lengths while supporting the operation of additional digital services.
During the presentation in Astana, a robot conductor named Sapar demonstrated the Wi-Fi connection process and explained how passengers could access the onboard network.
KTZ develops integrated passenger services
Alongside the satellite connectivity rollout, KTZ is developing a National Passenger Transportation System designed to consolidate information about passengers, trains, tickets, routes and services.
The system is intended to improve information management and support operational, commercial and financial decision-making across passenger rail operations.
Passengers are expected to access these services through a SuperApp mobile application, which remains under development.
The planned application will allow users to search for routes, review schedules, select seats and purchase tickets. During journeys, it is also expected to provide notifications, access to additional services and communication with customer support.
According to the company, integrating passenger and operational data will support demand analysis, service quality assessments and more efficient responses to customer feedback.
Digital infrastructure supports railway modernization
KTZ is positioning satellite connectivity as a foundation for further digital development across its passenger transport operations.
The programme involves integrating communications infrastructure with passenger information systems and service management tools, rather than providing internet access as a standalone feature.
The company expects the broader digital ecosystem to improve access to passenger services and support more efficient railway operations.
While the Starlink infrastructure has been implemented across the announced network of carriages and routes, the associated SuperApp and wider information system remain under development.
The initiative represents a significant step in the digital modernization of Kazakhstan’s passenger railway services, combining onboard connectivity with plans for more integrated passenger information and service delivery.
