HMM approves major investment to expand containership fleet

South Korean shipping company HMM has approved a KRW 2.168 trillion (approximately US$1.62 billion) investment programme covering 12 containerships, as the carrier moves to expand its fleet and strengthen its competitiveness in container shipping.
The investment was approved by HMM’s Board of Directors on 15 October 2026 and includes eight newbuildings of 13,000 TEU each, alongside the planned acquisition of four smaller resale newbuildings.
According to the regulatory disclosure, the programme represents approximately 8.16% of the company’s equity and is expected to add a combined 114,100 TEU of capacity to its fleet.
Investment combines large vessels and smaller containerships
The largest component of the programme involves eight new containerships, each with a nominal capacity of 13,000 TEU, representing a combined 104,000 TEU.
HMM also plans to acquire three 2,800 TEU vessels and one 1,700 TEU vessel through resale transactions involving newbuildings.
Together, the four smaller ships will contribute an additional 10,100 TEU, bringing the total planned capacity increase to 114,100 TEU.
The investment combines larger vessels with smaller units, providing HMM with additional capacity across different vessel sizes.
The regulatory disclosure confirms approval of the investment programme but does not establish that all shipbuilding and acquisition contracts have already been executed.
Final vessel deliveries expected by 2029
HMM expects the investment programme to run through December 2029, when the final vessels are scheduled for delivery.
The company indicated that the investment amount and implementation schedule may change depending on vessel specifications and delivery arrangements.
The decision forms part of HMM’s broader strategy to strengthen its container shipping fleet and improve operational competitiveness.
The latest investment approval represents a further step in the carrier’s fleet expansion plans, although the individual contracts and final delivery arrangements remain subject to confirmation.
