An €82 million loan from KfW IPEX-Bank will support the development and testing of autonomous container handling systems, with potential applications at other German terminals.

EUROGATE has secured an €82 million loan from KfW IPEX-Bank to support an automation and digitalisation pilot project at its container terminal in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

The financing will be used to develop and test autonomous terminal equipment and software intended to improve container handling efficiency and operational flexibility.

The project will also assess whether the technologies can be deployed more widely across EUROGATE’s German terminal network.

Pilot to test autonomous container handling

The Wilhelmshaven project will focus on the interaction between autonomous terminal trucks (ATTs) and automated stacking cranes (ASCs).

Under the proposed operating model, autonomous trucks will transport containers between the quay and automated stacking areas, reducing reliance on conventional manually operated equipment.

EUROGATE will also further develop its proprietary terminal software to support automated container terminal operations.

The pilot is intended to verify the operational readiness of these systems under practical terminal conditions.

According to the financing announcement, the project aims to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs through automated handling processes.

Electrification of container handling equipment is also expected to reduce fossil fuel consumption, although no quantified emissions savings have been disclosed.

Results could inform wider terminal rollout

The Wilhelmshaven pilot will provide operational data to support EUROGATE’s assessment of whether the proposed automated handling system is suitable for broader implementation.

Depending on the results, the company could consider introducing the technology initially at its Hamburg operations and subsequently at other German EUROGATE terminals.

The announcement does not confirm that these additional deployments have been approved.

KfW IPEX-Bank said the financing supports the modernisation of German port logistics infrastructure.

The companies have not disclosed a completion date for the pilot, the number of autonomous vehicles involved or a timetable for any potential rollout.
