ESPO and EFIP launch European port innovation knowledge platform

The Green Innovation Compass brings together research findings and practical experience to support environmental and digital improvements at maritime and inland ports.
The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and the European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP) have made the Green Innovation Compass available through their websites, providing maritime and inland ports with access to information on emerging technologies and operational practices.
Announced on 14 October 2026, the platform brings together research findings, demonstration projects and practical experience from ports, businesses and research institutions across Europe.
The initiative builds on the Horizon 2020-funded MAGPIE project, which brought together industry participants, public authorities and academic institutions to examine technologies and operational solutions for future port development.
Platform covers electrification and digitalisation
The Green Innovation Compass provides information on technologies and practices related to port electrification, alternative fuels, automation, operational resilience and digitalisation.
For each technology, the platform outlines potential applications, implementation requirements, expected impacts and factors that could support adoption.
Users can filter the available information according to their operational priorities, challenges, objectives and implementation timelines.
According to ESPO and EFIP, the initiative addresses the fragmentation of information on port innovation, which can make it difficult for individual ports to assess solutions developed or tested elsewhere.
The platform is intended to help port authorities and operators evaluate potential technologies based on their own infrastructure, operational requirements and development plans.
European organisations support knowledge sharing
The Green Innovation Compass was developed as part of the MAGPIE project, which examined how maritime and inland ports could function as more efficient and environmentally sustainable multimodal transport hubs.
By making the platform accessible through their respective websites, ESPO and EFIP aim to support the exchange of experience between European ports.
The initiative also allows users to contribute additional case studies, research findings and practical examples.
Following the completion of the MAGPIE project, the Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe (ALICE) will act as a legacy partner to support the platform’s long-term continuity.
The Green Innovation Compass is available through the websites of ESPO and EFIP, as well as its dedicated online platform.
The initiative does not introduce new regulatory requirements or establish mandatory technology standards for European ports. Instead, it provides a resource intended to support individual investment and operational decisions.
