Cadeler and Vattenfall Vindkraft have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore new operations and maintenance solutions for offshore wind farms, with a particular focus on major component exchanges.

The collaboration will be carried out through Nexra, Cadeler’s dedicated offshore wind service platform, and will combine the companies’ operational experience, service methodologies and long-term maintenance planning.

The partners will examine approaches aimed at making major component exchange (MCE) operations more efficient and scalable across different offshore wind turbine platforms.

Focus on major component exchanges

Major component exchanges involve the replacement of significant turbine components during the operational life of an offshore wind farm.

Under the agreement, Nexra and Vattenfall will explore concepts covering the efficiency, safety and scalability of these maintenance operations.

The initiative comes as a growing number of offshore wind turbines move further into their operational lives, increasing the need for specialised maintenance capabilities.

“The offshore wind industry is entering a new phase, with a growing installed base and increasingly complex maintenance needs,” said Jacob Christian Gregersen, Chief Growth Officer at Cadeler.

He said the collaboration would combine the companies’ expertise to examine new approaches to major component exchanges.

Partners target long-term maintenance needs

The companies will also assess how maintenance planning and service methods could support more predictable operations over the lifetime of offshore wind assets.

Pavlo Malyshenko, Head of Generation, Offshore Wind at Vattenfall, said major component exchanges involve costs, operational complexity and periods of lost electricity generation.

“Through this collaboration, we want to explore smarter approaches that support safe and reliable operations, improve long-term asset performance and reduce lifecycle costs,” Malyshenko said.

The memorandum of understanding establishes the framework for the two companies to explore potential solutions. No specific projects, investment commitments or implementation timetable were disclosed.
