The Starnav Elektra, described by classification society ABS as the first hybrid platform supply vessel (PSV) designed and built in Brazil, has been delivered to ABS class.

Built by Detroit Brasil at its Itajaí shipyard for Starnav Serviços Marítimos, the vessel will operate under a long-term charter to Petrobras, supporting offshore logistics activities in Brazilian waters.

The 92.1-metre vessel has a deadweight capacity of 5,500 tonnes and is equipped with a battery-hybrid propulsion system designed to support offshore operations.

Battery system supports offshore operations

The Starnav Elektra incorporates a 1,322 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery energy storage system developed to meet the vessel’s dynamic positioning class 2 (DP2) operational requirements.

According to ABS, the system can maintain the vessel’s position using battery power for up to 20 minutes following a single engine failure.

The battery installation is located on the main deck rather than inside the hull, a configuration intended to facilitate maintenance access and reduce operational risks.

The hybrid arrangement is also designed to allow the vessel to operate with fewer generators running, potentially reducing fuel consumption, emissions and engine maintenance requirements.

The vessel carries ABS ESS-LiBATTERY, HYBRID and SUSTAIN-1 class notations.

Starnav also stated that the PSV is prepared to operate on renewable fuels, including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

Further hybrid vessels planned

The Starnav Elektra is the first vessel in a planned programme of up to ten battery-hybrid ships.

According to ABS, the programme could include six platform supply vessels and four oil spill response vessels.

The announcement does not provide a construction timetable or confirm that all ten vessels have been contracted.

The delivery introduces a locally designed and built hybrid PSV into Brazil’s offshore support fleet, with the vessel expected to serve Petrobras’s logistics operations.
