Union Pacific Railroad has completed one of its largest military equipment transport operations, moving vehicles and supplies for a U.S. Army division between Colorado and California as part of a major military training exercise.

The operation involved 25 trains transporting equipment associated with three Army brigades and approximately 12,000 soldiers. Shipments travelled between Fort Carson, Colorado, and Yermo, California, supporting a training rotation intended to prepare military units for operational deployments.

The cargo included combat vehicles, trucks, support equipment and other supplies. The movement required coordination between Union Pacific and military personnel, with shipments scheduled over several months to support both the initial deployment and the return of equipment following the exercise.

Union Pacific coordinates military shipments across its rail network

The first of 13 outbound trains departed Fort Carson in early June 2026. Additional trains followed at approximately 48-hour intervals through early July, transporting equipment to California ahead of the training exercise.

Redeployment operations took place in August, when equipment was transported back to Fort Carson. Some military assets were also directed to three separate depot locations rather than returning to the original departure point.

The operation involved handling different categories of military equipment across a coordinated series of rail movements. According to Union Pacific, the shipments required extensive planning between railway personnel and military representatives to accommodate the scale and scheduling requirements of the exercise.

Jacque Bendon, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Union Pacific, said the operation demonstrated the railway’s capacity to transport large quantities of military equipment over long distances.

Military logistics and transcontinental rail connectivity

Union Pacific also linked the operation to its broader plans with Norfolk Southern to develop a coast-to-coast rail network.

According to Union Pacific, the proposed coast-to-coast network with Norfolk Southern would improve connectivity for military installations, manufacturers and ports across 43 states.

Union Pacific said the proposed network would provide greater flexibility and predictability for military logistics movements.

The movement illustrates the role of freight rail in transporting large volumes of military equipment between installations and training locations, particularly when shipments involve heavy vehicles and multiple train departures.
