Icon Energy expands containership investments

Icon Energy Corp. has agreed to acquire a minority interest in a containership employed under a long-term charter, extending its maritime co-investment activities beyond its core dry bulk shipping business.
The company will acquire an approximately 2.8% equity interest in an entity established to own a 1,800 TEU ECO container feeder built in 2023. The vessel is currently chartered to an unnamed major liner operator at a fixed daily rate of $24,750, with the charter scheduled to remain in effect until at least February 2028.
According to Icon Energy, the charter represents approximately $12 million in minimum contracted revenue. This amount relates to the vessel’s charter agreement and should not be interpreted as revenue attributable entirely to Icon’s minority investment.
Investment expected to close in October
The containership will be acquired by a consortium of professional maritime investors led by an established containership owner and operator, which will also assume responsibility for the vessel’s commercial and technical management.
Icon Energy expects to finance its minority investment using existing cash resources. The transaction is anticipated to close by the end of October 2026, subject to the execution of definitive documentation and customary closing conditions.
Under the proposed ownership structure, Icon will also have the right to appoint a representative to the board of directors of the vessel-owning entity. The company has not disclosed the financial consideration for its approximately 2.8% stake.
The agreement has been announced, but the investment has not yet been completed.
Second containership co-investment
The transaction follows an earlier investment by Icon Energy in a 2,000 TEU geared container feeder built in 2008, featuring substantial refrigerated container capacity.
That vessel is employed under a fixed-rate time charter with a major liner operator at $26,500 per day, with the charter extending until at least June 2028. Icon holds a 4.6% equity interest in the associated investment.
Including the newly announced transaction, Icon Energy’s containership co-investment portfolio comprises interests in two feeder vessels with a combined capacity of 3,800 TEU.
The company has described these investments as part of a strategy to complement its dry bulk operations through selective minority positions in other maritime segments alongside established industry partners.
The latest investment remains subject to completion, with closing currently expected before the end of October 2026.
