NYK and MISC venture secures long-term LNG carrier charter

A joint venture involving Japanese shipping company NYK Line and Malaysia’s MISC Berhad has signed a long-term charter agreement with Malaysia LNG for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier.
The agreement was concluded by Asia LNG Transport (ALT), with the vessel scheduled to be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China and delivered in 2028. A signing ceremony took place in Tokyo on 9 October 2026.
The new vessel will have an LNG cargo capacity of approximately 18,700 cubic metres and will be equipped with a dual-fuel diesel-electric (DFDE) propulsion system. Under the agreement, it is intended to transport LNG to Japan.
The contract adds another vessel to the shipping arrangements supporting LNG transportation between Malaysia and Japan, with construction and delivery still to take place.
The carrier will measure approximately 129.8 metres in length and 25.4 metres in breadth, according to the vessel specifications released by NYK.
Hironobu Watanabe, Senior Managing Executive Officer at NYK, said the company would work with Malaysia LNG, MISC and other partners to provide reliable LNG transportation services following the agreement.
NYK has identified LNG and LPG shipping as growth areas within its energy business under its medium-term management plan, Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026.
The company did not disclose the financial value or duration of the charter agreement in its announcement.
