Hupac to restore rail freight connection between Italy and Barcelona

Swiss intermodal transport operator Hupac has announced plans to resume its rail freight service between Busto Arsizio/Gallarate in northern Italy and Barcelona, Spain, from 9 November 2026.

The reinstated connection will operate three weekly round trips, providing an additional intermodal transport option between the two countries.

The service will use the Barcelona Combiconnect terminal, which Hupac identifies as a hub for onward connections to destinations across Spain.

Rail service to resume in November

The Busto Arsizio/Gallarate–Barcelona connection will link northern Italy with the Spanish intermodal network, supporting the movement of freight between the two markets.

According to Hupac, the service will operate three round trips per week from its scheduled restart on 9 November.

The company expects the reinstated route to expand transport options for customers moving freight between Italy and Spain.

The announcement does not specify train capacity, transit times or the equipment types accepted on the service.

Barcelona terminal provides onward connections

The service will operate through the Barcelona Combiconnect terminal, which offers access to additional destinations within Spain.

Hupac specifically identifies Tarragona, Madrid and Seville among the domestic markets accessible through the Barcelona hub.

These onward connections are intended to broaden the geographical coverage available to customers using the Italy–Barcelona service.

Hupac presents the reinstatement as part of its efforts to strengthen intermodal rail transport as an alternative to road freight.

Updated timetables and operational details are available through the company’s service documentation.
