European port innovation knowledge brought together in new digital platform

A new European knowledge platform, the Green Innovation Compass, has been introduced to help ports and other maritime stakeholders evaluate technologies and solutions related to sustainability, digitalisation and operational efficiency.
Developed as part of the legacy of the European Union’s Horizon 2020-funded MAGPIE project, the platform brings together research findings, demonstration results and practical experience from ports, businesses and research institutions across Europe.
The MAGPIE project, formally known as sMArt Green Ports as Integrated Efficient multimodal hubs, involved collaboration between ports, companies, knowledge institutions and public authorities. The Port of Rotterdam was among the project partners.
Connecting research with practical port applications
The Green Innovation Compass was developed in response to the fragmentation of knowledge surrounding port innovation, which can make it difficult for organisations to assess available technologies and their potential applications.
The platform covers several areas of port development, including electrification, alternative fuels, automation, resilience and digitalisation. For each technology, it provides information about potential applications, implementation requirements, expected impacts and factors that could support adoption.
Rather than recommending a single approach, the platform allows users to explore solutions according to their individual priorities, operational challenges, objectives and implementation timelines.
This approach is intended to support ports at different stages of technological development, recognising that infrastructure requirements and operational conditions vary between locations.
Long-term development beyond the MAGPIE project
The Green Innovation Compass has been designed as an evolving resource, with users encouraged to contribute additional knowledge, practical experience and examples of innovation.
Following the completion of the MAGPIE project, the Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe (ALICE) will assume responsibility as the platform’s legacy partner, supporting its long-term continuity.
The initiative is intended to preserve and make accessible the knowledge generated through European port innovation projects, while providing a resource for organisations assessing technologies associated with the sector’s environmental and digital transition.
