Wallenius Wilhelmsen upgrades connectivity across Ro-Ro fleet

Speedcast and Soya IT Marine Solutions have completed the deployment of upgraded connectivity systems across 41 roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen, supporting the shipping group’s fleet digitalisation programme.

The project, delivered by Soya IT Marine Solutions with connectivity services from Speedcast, integrates multiple satellite and terrestrial communication technologies to improve operational connectivity and crew access to digital services.

The upgraded network combines Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb low Earth orbit satellite services, Iridium Certus and LTE-based backup connectivity, alongside a global wide area network (WAN).

The deployment is designed to provide higher bandwidth, greater connectivity flexibility and improved access to digital systems across the participating vessels.

Hybrid connectivity supports vessel operations

The upgraded infrastructure enables managed access to enterprise software on vessel bridges, supporting the use of onboard business applications and communications systems.

Crew members also benefit from improved access to streaming services and social media during their off-duty hours.

The combination of satellite networks and backup communication services is intended to support connectivity as vessels operate across different regions and maritime environments.

James Trevelyan, Executive Vice President of Global Sales at Speedcast, said the project demonstrates the importance of network management and configuration expertise in large-scale fleet connectivity upgrades.

He also highlighted the role of secure data connectivity in supporting vessel operations and improving the onboard working environment.

Remote deployment across 41 vessels

A notable aspect of the programme was that connectivity upgrades were carried out entirely remotely, without requiring dedicated onboard installation visits for the commissioning process described in the announcement.

Soya IT Marine Solutions, which provides technical and operational support for the Wallenius Wilhelmsen fleet, worked with Speedcast’s project management teams to coordinate the deployment.

Remote commissioning was particularly important because the vessels operate internationally and typically spend only a few hours in port.

Thomas Bergefall, Vice President Group IS/IT at Soya Group, said the programme aimed to modernise connectivity while maintaining integration with existing vessel infrastructure and business systems.

Supporting a global Ro-Ro network

Wallenius Wilhelmsen operates approximately 125 vessels across 15 trade routes serving six continents, transporting cars, trucks, rolling equipment and breakbulk cargo.

Its wider logistics network includes inland distribution operations, 66 processing centres and seven marine terminals.

The completed upgrade covers 41 vessels rather than the company’s entire fleet.

The project represents a further step in the digitalisation of Ro-Ro shipping operations, combining satellite connectivity, enterprise software access and crew communications within a managed network environment.
