China Shipbuilding reports surge in new orders driven by containership contracts

China Shipbuilding Marine & Defense Equipment Co., Ltd. has reported RMB 35.799 billion in new orders during the first nine months of 2026, significantly exceeding its full-year contracting target.

According to a voluntary disclosure issued by the company, new orders secured between January and September represented 217.97% of its annual target of RMB 16.424 billion.

The contracts primarily included the construction of containerships with capacities of 1,900 TEU, 3,000 TEU, 5,300 TEU and 6,400 TEU.

The company did not disclose the total number of vessels ordered, the identities of the customers or the delivery schedules associated with the contracts.

Containership contracts support order growth

Containership construction remains one of China Shipbuilding Marine & Defense Equipment’s principal business activities.

The company said the newly secured orders form part of its regular commercial operations and that the customers involved have established creditworthiness and contractual performance capabilities.

The contracts have passed the company’s internal approval procedures and do not require additional approval from its board of directors or shareholders.

The disclosure highlights the company’s strong contracting performance during the first three quarters, although it does not provide a breakdown of order values by vessel type.

Expected impact on future operations

China Shipbuilding Marine & Defense Equipment expects the execution of the new contracts to have a positive effect on future cash flow and operating results.

However, the company noted that order execution remains subject to potential uncertainties, including changes in regulations, industrial policies, pricing and market conditions.

It also stated that the contracts are not expected to materially affect its operational independence or create significant dependence on the customers involved.

The reported RMB 35.799 billion represents the value of new orders secured during the reporting period, rather than revenue already recognised or payments received.

The company has not provided further details on individual contracts or the timetable for completing the vessels.
