Gothenburg RoRo Terminal expands capacity as cargo volumes rise

Gothenburg RoRo Terminal has reported a 5% increase in cargo volumes handled over the quay during the first half of 2026, following several years of investment in terminal infrastructure, rail connections and vessel-handling facilities.
Located at the Port of Gothenburg, the terminal provides regular RoRo shipping connections to freight hubs in the United Kingdom and Central Europe. Its cargo includes trailers and other wheeled units carrying forest products, steel, food, electronics and components for the automotive and engineering industries.
The terminal has undergone a series of upgrades over the past three years, including expanded operating areas, additional rail infrastructure, specialised cargo-handling facilities and improvements designed to accommodate larger vessels.
Terminal expansion strengthens rail and cargo handling
One of the largest developments was completed in 2024, when 144,000 square metres of additional terminal space became available in the outer port area. The expansion created a more consolidated operating area behind berths 712 and 713.
The terminal also integrated Arken Intermodal Terminal into its operations in 2023, adding 65,000 square metres of space and seven railway tracks. The facility enables trailers to be transferred directly between rail services and vessels.
Additional investments include an 11,000-square-metre cross-docking facility for steel products completed in 2025 and a 6,000-square-metre covered facility for forest products developed in 2024.
The facilities support the movement of cargo arriving from inland production centres by rail before onward shipment to European markets.
Berth improvements accommodate larger vessels
Marine infrastructure has also been upgraded to improve access for larger RoRo vessels.
During the 2022–2023 dredging season, the approach channel to the terminal’s quays was widened and deepened, allowing larger vessels to call and reducing certain weather-related operating restrictions.
In 2026, work was completed at berth 710, including an extension of the quay structure and installation of a new ramp. The improvements are intended to increase loading and unloading capacity while enabling the berth to accommodate larger ships.
Shipping companies CLdN and DFDS have also introduced larger and more modern vessels on routes serving Gothenburg.
Further improvements are planned for the terminal’s eastern quay, although no completion date has been specified.
The terminal’s development programme has also included a green hydrogen refuelling station established nearby in 2024 for heavy-duty trucks and terminal vehicles.
According to the Port of Gothenburg, the investments are intended to strengthen the terminal’s ability to handle growing RoRo traffic and support multimodal freight movements between Sweden and European markets.
