Nakilat expands gas carrier fleet with Energy North

Qatar Gas Transport Company Limited (Nakilat) has named its new LPG/ammonia carrier Energy North during a ceremony at HD Hyundai Samho’s shipyard in Yeongam, South Korea, marking a milestone in the company’s fleet expansion programme.

The vessel is the first under Nakilat’s six-ship construction programme at the South Korean shipyard, which includes two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and four LPG/ammonia carriers.

According to the company’s announcement, Energy North was scheduled to enter service on 2 October 2026.

New vessel designed for LPG and ammonia transportation

Energy North has a cargo capacity of 88,000 cubic metres and is designed to transport both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia.

The vessel is equipped with dual-fuel propulsion technology and emissions-reduction systems intended to improve fuel efficiency and operational flexibility.

Nakilat also highlighted the vessel’s ammonia-ready design, which supports its strategy to expand transportation capabilities for different types of energy cargo.

The company expects the vessel’s technical specifications to support its operations across the LPG and ammonia shipping markets.

Fleet expansion programme continues

The delivery programme at HD Hyundai Samho forms part of Nakilat’s broader investment in fleet modernisation and capacity expansion.

The six vessels under construction include four LPG/ammonia carriers and two LNG carriers, allowing the company to increase capacity across both gas shipping segments.

Nakilat Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Al Sulaiti described the addition of the first vessel under the programme as an important step in developing a more diversified fleet.

He also acknowledged the cooperation between Nakilat and HD Hyundai Samho in progressing the newbuilding programme.
