Port of Montreal and Adani Group renew cooperation to strengthen trade links

The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) and India’s Adani Group have renewed their collaboration agreement, reinforcing cooperation on maritime trade, port operations and logistics connectivity between the two countries.

The agreement was signed in Mumbai during Team Canada’s trade mission to India by Captain Sandeep Mehta, representing the Adani Group, and Marie-Claude Galarneau, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating and Transformation Officer of the MPA. Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu attended the signing ceremony.

The renewal builds on a partnership established in 2018 and aims to develop commercial opportunities along the Mundra–Montreal maritime corridor.

Focus on trade development and logistics connectivity

The renewed agreement provides a framework for joint promotion, information sharing and the identification of new business opportunities between the two port organisations.

It also includes the exchange of port management and technological expertise, with particular attention to operational improvements and the movement of cargo through road and rail networks.

The partners will explore additional areas of cooperation, including vehicle transportation.

The agreement does not announce a new shipping service or infrastructure project, but establishes priorities for further commercial and operational collaboration.

India emerges as a major trading partner

India ranked as the Port of Montreal’s second-largest trading market in 2025, with approximately one million tonnes of goods exchanged.

Exports accounted for 60% of the total, while imports represented 40%. Major imports included food products, ceramics and plastics, while exports consisted primarily of forestry and metal products.

To strengthen its commercial presence in India, the Montreal Port Authority has appointed Prakash Tulsiani as its representative in the country.

His role will include developing relationships with shipping lines, freight forwarders and companies involved in international trade, while promoting business opportunities between India and Canada.

MPA President and CEO Paul Bird highlighted India’s importance as a trading partner and Montreal’s position as a gateway to North American markets.

The renewed cooperation comes as Canada and India seek to strengthen bilateral trade relations and develop more diversified international supply chains.
