The first commercial ship-to-ship bunkering operation involving green ammonia has been completed in Zhoushan, China, marking a significant development in the use of alternative marine fuels.

The operation took place on 13 October 2026 in Zhejiang Province, where the dedicated ammonia bunkering vessel *Shenghang Yongle* supplied 1,000 tonnes of green ammonia to *Mineral Europa*, an ammonia-powered vessel owned by Belgian maritime group[CMB.TECH](https://pelavox.com/cmb-techs-first-ammonia-powered-bulk-carrier-begins-maiden-voyage/).

According to FKAB Marine Design, the operation represents the world’s first commercial ship-to-ship transfer of green ammonia for marine fuel use. It was jointly conducted by China Energy Engineering Group Hydrogen Energy Co., Ltd., CMB.TECH and Jiangsu Andefu Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

The milestone follows the conversion of *Shenghang Yongle* from an ammonia carrier into a vessel specifically equipped to supply liquid ammonia fuel to other ships.

## Converted ammonia carrier completes first bunkering operation

*Shenghang Yongle* is based on FKAB Marine Design’s L21 ammonia carrier design and was recently converted for ship-to-ship liquid ammonia bunkering operations.

Following the conversion, the vessel entered service as a dedicated ammonia bunker vessel, with the Zhoushan operation marking its first completed fuel transfer to another ship.

The receiving vessel, *Mineral Europa*, is part of CMB.TECH’s fleet of ammonia-powered vessels. The transfer of 1,000 tonnes of green ammonia demonstrates the application of dedicated bunkering infrastructure to support ships designed to use ammonia as a marine fuel.

The participating organisations also reported the issuance of what they describe as the world’s first ship-to-ship liquid ammonia bunkering licence.

The operation represents a practical step in establishing the equipment, procedures and supporting infrastructure required for ammonia bunkering, rather than a demonstration limited to laboratory or small-scale testing.

## Green ammonia supply chain reaches operational milestone

Beyond the fuel transfer itself, the companies involved highlighted the connection of several stages of the green ammonia supply chain.

According to the announcement, the project brought together green ammonia production, transportation, storage, bunkering and onboard fuel application within a single operational framework.

The participants also described the initiative as the first green ammonia project directly connected with green electricity and incorporating traceability across the fuel’s carbon footprint.

These developments are intended to support the wider commercial adoption of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel, particularly for deep-sea shipping, where the availability of suitable bunkering infrastructure remains an important consideration.

Ammonia does not contain carbon and therefore does not produce carbon dioxide from the fuel itself during combustion. However, its overall environmental performance depends on how it is produced and used, including upstream emissions and the management of other potential emissions during onboard operation.

The successful transfer at Zhoushan demonstrates that a dedicated ammonia bunkering vessel can supply a receiving ship in a commercial-scale operation.

While the participating companies describe the project as a series of global firsts, the announcement does not establish how quickly similar bunkering operations will become available at other ports.

The operation nevertheless provides a significant reference point for the development of ammonia fuel supply infrastructure and its potential application in international shipping.
