Tsuneishi Shipbuilding has delivered its first methanol dual-fuel Kamsarmax bulk carrier constructed at its Chinese shipbuilding facility, marking an expansion of the company’s alternative-fuel vessel production capabilities across its international operations.

The vessel was handed over on 28 October 2026 by Tsuneishi Group (Zhoushan) Shipbuilding (TZS), the Japanese shipbuilder’s facility in China. It is equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system that allows the use of both conventional marine fuel and methanol, providing flexibility in fuel selection.

According to Tsuneishi, operating the vessel on methanol can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to approximately 80%, sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions by up to 99% and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by up to approximately 10% compared with heavy fuel oil. These figures represent the shipbuilder’s stated emissions reduction potential rather than measured operational performance for the newly delivered vessel.

The Kamsarmax design is one of Tsuneishi’s principal bulk carrier products, with more than 400 vessels completed to date. The ship type was developed to combine cargo-carrying capacity with operational flexibility across major dry bulk trades.

The delivery follows the completion of Tsuneishi’s first methanol dual-fuel Kamsarmax at its Philippine shipbuilding facility earlier in 2026. The Chinese-built vessel therefore represents a further expansion of the design’s production across the group’s overseas shipyards rather than the first delivery of its kind worldwide.

Tsuneishi’s Zhoushan facility has also previously constructed four methanol dual-fuel container vessels with a capacity of 5,900 TEU each. The addition of a methanol-capable bulk carrier extends the shipyard’s alternative-fuel construction experience into another major commercial vessel segment.

The shipbuilder said the development supports its efforts to establish production capabilities for a wider range of vessels using alternative fuels, as shipping companies respond to evolving environmental requirements and fuel strategies.

Tsuneishi did not disclose the name of the newly delivered bulk carrier, its owner or its intended commercial deployment in the announcement.
