South Africa’s Transnet Freight Rail has completed a trial operation involving a freight train measuring approximately 7.6 kilometres in length and comprising 696 wagons, claiming a new world record for the longest train.

The operation took place on 17–18 October 2026, with the train travelling from Saldanha to Loop 18 in the Northern Cape over a distance of approximately 861 kilometres.

According to Transnet, the trial was designed to demonstrate the technical and operational capabilities of its heavy-haul railway infrastructure. The train consisted of empty wagons rather than a commercially loaded iron ore service.

## Trial tests heavy-haul railway capabilities

The operation used a combination of electric and diesel-electric locomotives, supported by Radio Distributed Power technology, which enables locomotives positioned at different points along a train to operate in coordination.

Distributed power is particularly important for very long freight trains, as it helps manage traction and braking forces across the train formation.

The trial was conducted on Transnet’s iron ore railway network, which connects mining areas in South Africa’s Northern Cape with the export facilities at Saldanha Bay.

The successful movement of the 696-wagon formation demonstrated the railway operator’s ability to coordinate an exceptionally long train over a substantial distance.

However, the test does not establish that trains of this length are being used in regular commercial freight operations.

## Transnet claims new world record

Transnet described the operation as a world-record achievement, exceeding the length of the train operated by Australian mining company BHP in 2001.

The BHP train measured approximately 7.35 kilometres and consisted of 682 loaded iron ore wagons. That achievement is recognised by Guinness World Records.

Transnet’s reported 7.6-kilometre formation would exceed the previous benchmark in both length and wagon count.

However, independent Guinness certification of the South African operation has not been confirmed.

The trial highlights the technical capabilities of South Africa’s heavy-haul railway system, although the operational and economic implications of using longer trains in regular service remain to be established.
