The Port of Southampton has received two additional quay cranes at DP World Southampton, completing a £60 million investment programme aimed at strengthening the port’s container handling infrastructure.

The latest delivery brings the total number of new quay cranes to four, following the arrival of the first two units earlier in 2026. According to Associated British Ports (ABP), the programme represents Europe’s largest quay crane investment.

The new equipment is intended to improve the terminal’s ability to accommodate some of the world’s largest container vessels and support container operations at one of the United Kingdom’s major international trade gateways.

## Investment strengthens container terminal infrastructure

The container terminal at Southampton is operated by DP World, while ABP owns and operates the wider port.

According to ABP, the terminal handles approximately two million containers annually, providing connections between UK businesses and international markets.

The four new cranes form part of efforts to strengthen the port’s cargo handling infrastructure as container vessels continue to increase in size.

The final delivery follows a series of major vessel calls at Southampton during 2026, including large container ships, automotive carriers and cruise vessels.

Alastair Welch, ABP Regional Director for Southampton, welcomed the completion of the crane deliveries and highlighted the port’s wider infrastructure development.

“Congratulations to DP World on the arrival of their new cranes. It’s the latest in a line of ‘giant’ milestones for the Port of Southampton in 2026,” said Welch.

ABP said it continues to work with DP World and other partners on infrastructure and service improvements intended to support the port’s long-term development and supply chain operations.

The announcement confirms the arrival of all four cranes but does not specify when the final two units will enter operational service.
