Singapore Airlines (SIA) has signed a binding agreement with Aether Beacon Pte Ltd, part of Aether Fuels, to purchase up to 4,800 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over a three-year period, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028.

The fuel will be supplied from Project Beacon, a production facility being developed at Aster’s refining complex on Pulau Bukom in Singapore. Under the agreement, Singapore Airlines will become the first airline to purchase SAF from the project, marking its first procurement of aviation fuel produced using Aether’s waste-carbon conversion technology.

Project Beacon will use feedstocks including biomethane and industrial waste gases to produce aviation fuel through Aether’s proprietary Aurora technology. The process is based on an adaptation of Fischer-Tropsch technology, which converts gaseous feedstocks into liquid fuels.

This production method provides an alternative to the hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) pathway, which depends on lipid-based raw materials such as oils and fats. The SAF produced at Project Beacon is intended to be certified under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed between Singapore Airlines and Aether Fuels in 2025, before the announcement of Project Beacon. Since then, Aether has selected Singapore as the location for its first commercial production facility and developed partnerships supporting the project.

### Aether Fuels plans further production expansion

Alongside the Project Beacon development, Aether Fuels is planning a larger commercial production facility, which it intends to bring into operation by 2031.

According to the company, the proposed plant would have a production capacity at least ten times greater than Project Beacon, forming part of its longer-term expansion of next-generation sustainable aviation fuel production.

Lee Wen Fen, Chief Sustainability Officer of Singapore Airlines, said securing future SAF supplies and supporting alternative production pathways were important elements of the airline’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Conor Madigan, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Aether Fuels, described the agreement as an important step in establishing commercial demand for alternative aviation fuel production technologies.

The companies said the agreement also supports Singapore’s development of lower-carbon aviation fuel production capabilities, drawing on the country’s existing refining infrastructure and position as an international aviation hub.

Fuel deliveries under the agreement are expected to commence in 2028, subject to the development and operation of the Project Beacon facility.
