Shannon Foynes Port Company (SFPC) reported record earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) and operating profit for 2025, supported by revenue growth and increased cargo activity across its port operations.

The Irish port operator recorded turnover of €17.63 million, an increase of 12% compared with 2024, while EBITDA exceeded €8 million for the first time.

Operating profit reached €5.71 million, compared with €4.81 million in the previous year, representing an increase of approximately 18.7%.

The company’s operating margin rose to 32.4%, while its EBITDA margin stood at 45.4%.

## Cargo volumes increase across Shannon Estuary

Total cargo throughput across the Shannon Estuary increased by 2.2% to 9.35 million tonnes during 2025.

Foynes Port, the company’s largest terminal, recorded its highest annual cargo volume, with tonnage rising 10.8% year on year.

Revenue from shipping and cargo activities increased by €0.8 million, equivalent to 10.1%, reflecting stronger activity across directly managed and privately operated terminals.

The performance of the Foynes and Limerick ports, together with rental and ancillary income, helped offset declining cargo volumes associated with the transition away from coal-fired power generation at Moneypoint.

Moneypoint previously accounted for approximately 20% of total cargo throughput across the Shannon Estuary.

## Financial position supports infrastructure investment

SFPC reported net debt of €6.9 million at the end of 2025, representing a reduction of €3 million compared with the previous year.

The company reported net assets of approximately €72 million, while its balance-sheet value was stated at €71.6 million.

Capital additions during the year totalled €4.59 million, primarily associated with construction projects and the development consent process for the proposed Foynes Island Deepwater Port.

The project forms part of the company’s Vision 2041 masterplan, which aims to develop the Shannon Estuary as an international shipping, logistics and economic hub.

Under its Strategic Plan 2026–2030, SFPC has identified €210 million in planned capital expenditure to expand port facilities and accommodate future demand.

## Road and rail connectivity remain development priorities

The company also highlighted progress in improving transport connections serving the port.

Construction work to reinstate the approximately 40-kilometre railway between Limerick and Foynes is expected to enable the resumption of freight services in the first quarter of 2027.

The restored connection is intended to provide an alternative to road transport and improve the integration of Foynes with Ireland’s national rail network.

Meanwhile, the Adare bypass section of the regional road infrastructure programme remains scheduled for completion by summer 2027.

Further development of road connections to Foynes is considered necessary to support projected port growth, with the wider scheme targeted for completion by 2030.

## Offshore renewable energy shapes long-term strategy

SFPC continues to position the proposed Foynes Island Deepwater Port as infrastructure capable of supporting offshore renewable energy projects and future maritime logistics demand.

The company welcomed progress on Ireland’s National Designated Maritime Area Plan, which is intended to identify maritime areas for offshore renewable energy development.

SFPC Chief Executive Officer Pat Keating said the company’s financial performance reflected growth in revenue, cost management and more effective use of existing port assets.

He also identified the development of deepwater port capacity and improved road and rail connectivity as central priorities for the company’s long-term investment strategy.

The proposed investments are intended to strengthen the Shannon Estuary’s role in supporting freight transport, industrial activity and Ireland’s energy transition.
