Puerto Aguadulce in Buenaventura, Colombia, has taken delivery of five hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes as part of an approximately $12 million investment to expand container yard capacity and improve cargo-handling operations.

The new equipment will operate in designated sections of the terminal’s container yard, which have been redesigned to accommodate the cranes and support more efficient container movements. Once commissioned, the RTGs are expected to increase the availability of truck appointments for container deliveries and collections by approximately 30%.

The terminal also expects the additional equipment to reduce truck waiting and service times, improving the movement of containers between the yard and inland transport operations.

Each crane has a lifting capacity of up to 50 metric tons and is integrated with the terminal’s Navis N4 terminal operating system. The connection will support yard coordination, real-time equipment monitoring and more accurate container positioning.

The RTGs are equipped with interlocking and positioning systems that restrict container movements to locations authorised by the terminal operating system. These controls are designed to reduce container misplacement and improve operational safety.

Puerto Aguadulce estimates that the hybrid cranes will consume approximately 45% less fuel than previous-generation equipment. The investment therefore combines additional cargo-handling capacity with measures intended to reduce fuel consumption.

The new cranes will undergo technical testing and an operational transition period before entering full commercial service. The terminal has not specified a confirmed commissioning date.

The delivery follows an earlier equipment expansion announced in February 2026, when Puerto Aguadulce received two super post-Panamax quay cranes and three hybrid RTGs.

The latest investment continues the terminal’s programme of upgrading cargo-handling infrastructure and improving operational efficiency at Colombia’s Pacific gateway.
