The Port of Vigo in Spain is moving forward with plans to reorganise its container terminal after awarding a contract for the demolition of eight former cement silos, a project expected to release approximately 6,000 square metres of operational space.

The initiative forms part of the port authority’s broader efforts to optimise existing infrastructure and respond to growing demand for container handling capacity.

The structures, previously used by cement company Tudela Veguín, occupy an area within the container terminal that the port intends to convert into usable logistics and cargo-handling space.

## Supporting growth in container traffic

According to the Port Authority of Vigo, the project comes amid sustained growth in container traffic, which is expected to reach a new record in 2026.

The authority anticipates an increase of approximately 5% in container volumes during the year, with further growth expected beyond 2026.

Recovering the area currently occupied by the silos will allow the terminal to reorganise its available space and improve the conditions for handling and moving containerised cargo.

The initiative focuses on making more efficient use of existing port land rather than constructing an entirely new terminal.

## Demolition and redevelopment timetable

With the demolition contract awarded, the next phase will involve completely emptying the eight silos before dismantling the structures.

Once demolition is completed, the port will prepare and adapt the recovered land for operational use.

The maximum execution period for the project is eight months, although the port authority intends to accelerate the works.

Its objective is to make the reclaimed area available for terminal operations by spring 2027.

The authority has not disclosed the contract value or the name of the selected contractor in the supplied announcement.

## Continuing the port’s infrastructure transformation

The latest project follows an earlier programme that removed eight additional cement silos between 2015 and 2019.

According to the port authority, those works reduced the visual impact of the industrial structures, recovered valuable port land and improved conditions for cargo loading and unloading.

The removal of the remaining eight silos represents another step in the gradual transformation of the terminal’s infrastructure.

By reclaiming approximately 6,000 square metres within the existing port area, Vigo aims to provide additional operational flexibility as container traffic continues to increase.
