The Port of Gdańsk handled 65.2 million tonnes of cargo during the first nine months of 2026, an increase of more than 10% from the 59.1 million tonnes recorded in the corresponding period last year, supported by higher container, general cargo and bulk volumes.

The Polish port recorded an increase of approximately 6.1 million tonnes in total throughput, with containerised cargo among the main contributors to growth. Container traffic rose by 21% in TEU terms, reaching nearly 2.5 million TEU compared with just over 2 million TEU in the first three quarters of 2025.

In tonnage terms, containerised cargo increased by 17.6% to 21.1 million tonnes. General cargo, including containers, reached 23.5 million tonnes, an increase of 3.6 million tonnes or 18% year on year.

The figures reflect continued growth in cargo volumes at the Baltic port, following a first half in which throughput reached 41.7 million tonnes and container handling also recorded double-digit growth.

### Container and bulk cargo drive higher volumes

Liquid fuels remained the port’s largest cargo category, accounting for approximately 45% of total throughput. Volumes reached 29.4 million tonnes between January and September, broadly unchanged from the corresponding period of 2025.

General cargo represented more than 36% of total throughput, while coal accounted for approximately 10%.

Coal handling increased by 36% to 6.7 million tonnes, representing an additional 1.8 million tonnes compared with the previous year. Grain volumes also rose significantly, increasing by 33% to 2.1 million tonnes, with grain terminals handling more than half a million additional tonnes.

The only main cargo category to record a decline was other bulk cargo, where volumes decreased by 1.5% to 2.8 million tonnes.

The increases across general cargo, coal and grain, alongside relatively stable liquid fuel volumes, contributed to the port’s overall growth during the nine-month period.

### Infrastructure development remains a priority

Dorota Pyć, President of the Management Board of the Port of Gdańsk, said the nine-month results reflected stronger cargo demand and the port’s continued investment in operating capacity and transport accessibility.

According to Pyć, the combination of growing cargo flows, infrastructure development and cooperation with port operators is supporting Gdańsk’s position within international supply chains.

The port authority identified containerised general cargo as an important area for further development, with investment in infrastructure and operational capabilities intended to accommodate future growth.

The results follow the port’s earlier announcement that monthly throughput exceeded 8 million tonnes for the first time in August 2026.

The Port of Gdańsk’s performance during the first three quarters points to another year of increased cargo handling, although the authority has not provided a full-year throughput forecast in its latest announcement.
