Norfolk Southern has completed six major railway infrastructure projects during a single 26-hour maintenance window on its W Line across southern Indiana and Kentucky, strengthening a freight corridor serving intermodal and automotive traffic between the US Midwest and Southeast.

The coordinated programme included three bridge replacements, track and ballast renewal, modifications to a complex rail junction and infrastructure preparations for an automated railcar inspection portal. According to the railway operator, combining the projects into one scheduled work period avoided five additional maintenance windows that would otherwise have affected operations.

Approximately 115 employees from Norfolk Southern’s Engineering and Transportation departments participated in the programme, following several months of planning and coordination involving materials, equipment and train movements.

Among the completed works were three bridge replacements across Indiana and Kentucky, alongside track and ballast renewal through the English Tunnel in Indiana. The tunnel project involved approximately 400 feet of track and required specialised methods because of restricted clearances within the structure.

In Bretzville, Indiana, Norfolk Southern installed new track to support an automated railcar inspection portal planned for 2027. The project involved preparatory railway infrastructure work, with the inspection portal itself scheduled for a later stage.

### Junction upgrades and bridge replacements

One of the more complex elements involved modifications to the Portland Avenue rail junction in Louisville, Kentucky, where crews replaced a diamond crossover and four power switches.

The junction accommodates train movements across yard, mainline and branch-line tracks, requiring coordination during the installation process.

In Shelbyville, Kentucky, crews replaced an existing four-span bridge with a new two-span structure measuring 130 feet and realigned track through a curve. The changes increased the permitted train speed from 30 to 35 mph, with the revised alignment capable of supporting speeds of 40 mph in the future.

A further bridge replacement near Velpen, Indiana, involved the installation of a 62-foot prestressed concrete structure.

David Taylor, Division Engineer at Norfolk Southern, said the combined approach enabled the company to complete substantial infrastructure improvements while reducing the number of separate maintenance periods. Additional work undertaken during the window included rail replacement, welding, drainage maintenance and grinding.

The programme required coordination between engineering teams, transportation personnel and Norfolk Southern’s Network Operations Center, which managed train movements before, during and after the maintenance period.

Specialised track components were also assembled in advance at the company’s Roadway Material Yard in Roanoke, Virginia, to support installation during the scheduled closure.

Norfolk Southern said the completed projects were intended to improve infrastructure reliability, reduce future maintenance requirements and support the long-term operation of the W Line freight corridor.
