Port of Newcastle has welcomed a new trans-Tasman shipping connection operated by MOVe Logistics, providing a direct maritime link between Australia’s Hunter region and New Zealand. The service commenced on 27 October and will handle containerised and breakbulk cargo through the port’s Multipurpose Terminal at Mayfield.

The new connection forms part of Port of Newcastle’s efforts to diversify its cargo activities and expand trade opportunities for regional manufacturers, exporters and importers. It also provides businesses across the Hunter and wider New South Wales region with an alternative to moving international freight through ports in Sydney.

Port of Newcastle Chief Executive Officer Craig Carmody said the service represented a practical step towards expanding the port’s trade activities and increasing transport options for regional industries. He highlighted the importance of providing access to international markets for businesses involved in mining equipment, advanced engineering, food production and agricultural exports.

For companies trading with New Zealand, the Newcastle connection could reduce the need for additional road transport to and from Sydney. According to the port, this may help lower landside logistics costs, limit exposure to congestion-related delays and simplify freight movements.

## Established trans-Tasman service expands to Newcastle

MOVe Oceans has operated its trans-Tasman shipping route since 2022, transporting bagged cargo, oversized breakbulk shipments and project cargoes. The addition of Newcastle extends the service’s reach to businesses in the Hunter and surrounding areas, with both breakbulk and container transport options available.

Mike Brough, General Manager Oceans and International at MOVe Logistics, said the company viewed Newcastle as a long-term service opportunity for importers and exporters in New South Wales. He noted that the existing trans-Tasman operation is supported by established customers and ongoing demand for specialised cargo transportation.

The service also supports Port of Newcastle’s broader objective of developing containerised trade alongside its existing cargo activities. The port is engaging with regional manufacturers, logistics providers and trading companies to identify additional cargo opportunities and encourage greater use of the new connection.

The announcement does not specify the service’s sailing frequency, the New Zealand ports included in its rotation or the vessels assigned to the route.

Port of Newcastle and MOVe Logistics intend to develop demand for the connection as regional businesses assess the opportunities offered by direct shipping between Newcastle and New Zealand.
