Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and CMB.TECH have held a joint naming ceremony for three ammonia-fueled Capesize bulk carriers under construction in China, marking a further milestone in the development of ammonia propulsion for large dry bulk vessels.

The ceremony took place on 29 October 2026 at CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). According to MOL, the vessels are the world’s first three ammonia-fueled Capesize bulk carriers and are scheduled for phased delivery beginning in early 2027.

The vessels have been named RURI MIRAI, RURI SEKAI and RURI HIKARI. The ceremony was attended by Alexander Saverys, Chief Executive Officer of CMB.TECH, and Kazuhiro Takahashi, Managing Executive Officer of MOL, alongside other representatives involved in the project.

Following delivery, the three bulk carriers are expected to be jointly owned by MOL and CMB.TECH, with MOL planning to operate them under long-term charter arrangements.

Each vessel will have a deadweight capacity of approximately 209,800 tonnes, an overall length of 299.95 metres and a beam of 50 metres. The ammonia fuel storage arrangement will comprise two tanks, each with a capacity of 3,000 cubic metres.

### Preparing for ammonia-fueled operations

MOL said it is working with internal teams and external stakeholders to establish operating procedures and safety measures ahead of the vessels’ entry into service.

The three Capesize carriers are expected to form the company’s first fleet of ocean-going vessels developed for net-zero-emission operations, supporting its longer-term plans to introduce alternative marine fuels.

Ammonia does not release carbon dioxide when burned, although its overall environmental performance depends on factors including fuel production and the management of other emissions. The use of ammonia as a marine fuel also requires dedicated safety arrangements because of its toxic properties.

The project forms part of an existing collaboration between MOL and CMB.TECH to introduce ammonia-fueled vessels into commercial shipping.

MOL’s environmental strategy, outlined in its BLUE ACTION 2035 programme, includes an objective to begin operating net-zero-emission ocean-going vessels during the 2020s and achieve net-zero emissions across the group by 2050.

The scheduled delivery of the three vessels from early 2027 will represent the next stage of the project, moving from construction and preparation towards planned commercial operations.
