Finnish forest products company Metsä is returning to Philadelphia, with its cargo operations expected to generate approximately 260,000 metric tons of annual throughput at PhilaPort.

The shipments will be handled by Penn Warehousing at the port’s Forest Products Center, supporting Philadelphia’s role as an import gateway for forest products destined for manufacturers across the northeastern and midwestern United States.

Wagenborg Shipping will provide the maritime service, with vessel sailings scheduled every three weeks.

PhilaPort marked the return of Metsä on 7 October 2026, recognising the renewed commercial relationship between the company, the port and its logistics partners.

## Regular shipping service supports forest products trade

The arrangement is expected to provide a steady flow of forest products through Philadelphia’s waterfront facilities, generating activity for terminal workers, warehouse operators, trucking companies and other businesses involved in cargo distribution.

Forest products represent an established segment of PhilaPort’s cargo operations, with the Forest Products Center providing facilities for handling and storing these commodities.

“Forest products are one of PhilaPort’s core strengths, and we’re excited to welcome a major company like Metsä back to Philadelphia,” said Rich Lazer, CEO of PhilaPort.

The port expects the renewed service to support regional supply chains connecting maritime imports with manufacturing customers in the Northeast and Midwest.

## Economic contribution projected for the region

According to estimates provided by PhilaPort, the service could support approximately 560 jobs and generate $34.7 million in labour income.

The projected economic output amounts to $54.6 million, including direct, indirect and induced effects. The port also estimates total tax revenue of $9.6 million, of which approximately $2.7 million would be collected at state and local levels.

These figures represent projected economic contributions associated with the service rather than results already achieved.

The return of Metsä adds regular forest products cargo to Philadelphia’s port operations, with Wagenborg Shipping’s three-week sailing frequency providing the maritime connection for the renewed trade.
