Maersk Tankers has held the naming ceremony for *Jessie Mærsk* in Mokpo, South Korea, marking another milestone in its programme to introduce ten Very Large Ammonia and Gas Carriers (VLAC/VLGCs).

The vessel is the second in the series being built at HD Hyundai Samho and forms part of the company’s re-entry into gas shipping. The newbuildings are designed to transport both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia, providing flexibility to serve different cargo markets.

Maersk Tankers said the programme reflects its long-term commitment to owning and operating gas carriers capable of supporting existing demand and the development of ammonia transportation.

## New vessels designed for LPG and ammonia

The new series incorporates the ability to transport either LPG or ammonia, allowing the vessels to serve both established gas trades and the developing ammonia market.

The ships also include a future dual-fuel engine retrofit option, which could enable them to use ammonia as marine fuel following modification.

The retrofit capability is distinct from their existing ability to transport ammonia as cargo. Maersk Tankers has not stated that *Jessie Mærsk* currently operates on ammonia fuel.

The ten-vessel programme began with *Jane Mærsk*, which was delivered earlier in 2026. The first vessel has a cargo capacity of 93,000 cubic metres, according to HD Hyundai Samho.

## Maersk Tankers expands gas shipping activities

The naming of *Jessie Mærsk* represents a further step in Maersk Tankers’ plans to rebuild its presence in the gas carrier sector.

The company said the new vessels would strengthen its position in gas shipping and create additional commercial opportunities as they progressively join the fleet.

The ceremony was held at HD Hyundai Samho’s facilities in South Korea, where the shipbuilding programme is being carried out.

While Maersk Tankers has confirmed the naming of *Jessie Mærsk*, its announcement does not specify a delivery date for the vessel.

The company expects the new series to support its longer-term participation in LPG and ammonia transportation, with the option to adopt ammonia propulsion technology in the future.
