Maersk has announced a series of surcharge adjustments affecting inland container movements in North America and international shipping routes, with implementation dates spanning October and November 2026.

The changes include higher Emergency Intermodal Fuel Surcharges for cargo moving between inland rail ramps or container yards and ocean terminals in the United States and Canada, alongside revised Peak Season Surcharges (PSS) on several trade corridors.

The carrier attributed the intermodal fuel adjustment to recent increases in diesel prices.

## North American intermodal fuel charges to increase

From 16 November 2026, Maersk will increase its Emergency Intermodal Fuel Surcharge on eligible container movements between inland rail ramps or container yards and ocean terminals in the United States and Canada.

The revised charges apply to both container yard (CY) and store door (SD) cargo, with different amounts for dry and refrigerated containers.

For store door shipments, the surcharge is separate from any inland fuel charges associated with cargo pickup or delivery.

Maersk said the existing billing descriptions will remain unchanged, with separate classifications for imports and exports.

The announcement does not specify the previous surcharge levels, meaning the absolute or percentage increase cannot be established from the revised tariff schedule alone.

## Peak season surcharges revised on Asia-related routes

Maersk has also revised PSS levels for selected shipments from the Indian subcontinent to North American destinations, effective 17 October 2026.

The announced charges include US$6,500 for specified dry container shipments from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan to Houston, as well as shipments from South and East India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives to other covered destination ports.

For dry containers originating in Pakistan, the revised PSS is US$5,000, while the announced reefer surcharge is US$4,000 for the specified equipment categories.

Separately, Maersk has announced revised PSS levels for shipments from China and Hong Kong to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, effective 30 October 2026 until further notice.

The charges are US$1,100 for 20-foot containers and US$1,700 for both 40-foot and 45-foot containers.

## South American exports face additional charges

From 1 November 2026, Maersk will introduce a PSS of US$500 per container on shipments from Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay to Egypt and Portugal.

The same charge will apply to shipments from Brazil to the two destinations from 15 November 2026.

The surcharge covers the specified 20-foot and 40-foot dry and refrigerated container categories.

According to Maersk, the announced PSS charges do not apply to SPOT bookings. For eligible non-SPOT shipments, their application depends on the relevant Price Calculation Date and applicable tariff conditions.

Additional local and contingency charges may also apply.
