India’s Ministry of Defence has signed contracts with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy, marking a major investment in the country’s domestic shipbuilding industry.

The agreements, valued at a combined INR 538.67 billion (Rs 53,866.50 crore), were signed on 2 November 2026 in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. Under the contracts, GRSE will build five vessels, while GSL will construct the remaining three.

The programme represents the first project in which the Indian Navy will provide the indigenous vessel designs and defence public sector shipyards selected through a competitive process will undertake construction. The arrangement is intended to strengthen India’s domestic capabilities in naval vessel design, engineering and shipbuilding.

The eight corvettes will be equipped for a range of naval operations, including maritime surveillance, coastal defence and the protection of shipping routes. Their planned capabilities also cover operations against surface and underwater threats, as well as missions in coastal waters.

Beyond the naval requirements, the project is expected to generate substantial activity across India’s shipbuilding supply chain. The Ministry of Defence estimates that construction will support approximately 7.2 million person-days of employment at the shipyards and a further 46 million person-days across supporting industries and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises over the next decade.

The contracts are also expected to increase opportunities for domestic manufacturers supplying shipbuilding materials, marine equipment and associated technologies. Both shipyards will work within a wider industrial network involving public sector companies, private businesses and specialised suppliers.

The programme forms part of India’s broader efforts to expand domestic defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported equipment. It also reinforces the role of Indian shipyards in delivering complex vessel construction projects through locally developed designs and industrial capabilities.

The Ministry of Defence did not specify the delivery schedule for the eight vessels in its announcement.
