IINO Lines has signed a transition loan agreement with Mizuho Bank to finance the acquisition of LUMI AURORA, a very large gas carrier (VLGC) equipped with an LPG dual-fuel propulsion system.

The agreement forms part of the Japanese shipping company’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through investments in vessels capable of operating on lower-carbon fuels.

The IINO Lines transition loan will support the acquisition of the LPG carrier under the company’s existing Green Transition Finance Framework, which identifies eligible investments linked to its decarbonisation strategy.

The financial value of the agreement and the loan’s repayment terms were not disclosed.

## IINO Lines transition loan supports vessel investment

The financing arrangement was structured by Mizuho Bank to support the acquisition of LUMI AURORA, which can use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a propulsion fuel.

Transition loans are financing instruments intended to support investments that contribute to reducing emissions as companies move towards lower-carbon operations.

Unlike financing arrangements focused exclusively on activities already classified as green, transition finance can support projects designed to reduce the environmental impact of existing industrial operations.

In this case, the financing is directed towards a gas carrier equipped with dual-fuel technology.

According to IINO Lines, the vessel has one of the largest cargo tank capacities in the VLGC segment.

Its cargo-carrying capacity is intended to support lower fuel consumption per tonne of cargo transported, while its LPG dual-fuel propulsion system provides an alternative to operating exclusively on heavy fuel oil.

The company states that using LPG as fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional vessels powered solely by heavy fuel oil.

However, the announcement does not provide specific emissions reduction percentages, vessel capacity figures or technical performance data for LUMI AURORA.

It also does not specify the proportion of the vessel’s operations expected to use LPG rather than conventional marine fuel.

## LPG dual-fuel technology and emissions

The acquisition reflects IINO Lines’ approach to reducing emissions through the introduction of alternative-fuel vessel technology.

LPG dual-fuel propulsion systems allow vessels to operate using LPG alongside conventional marine fuels, providing operational flexibility while supporting lower-emission operations when LPG is used.

For gas carriers, the technology represents one option for reducing emissions without relying entirely on conventional heavy fuel oil propulsion.

The environmental performance of such vessels depends on several factors, including fuel selection, operating conditions and actual fuel consumption.

In its announcement, IINO Lines identified both the vessel’s cargo capacity and its propulsion system as factors supporting the investment’s environmental objectives.

The company did not disclose a quantified comparison of the vessel’s expected emissions against those of a conventional VLGC.

As a result, the financing agreement establishes the intended decarbonisation role of the acquisition without providing sufficient technical information to calculate its anticipated emissions savings.

## Financing aligned with transition framework

The acquisition of LUMI AURORA qualifies as an eligible project under IINO Lines’ Green Transition Finance Framework.

The framework was established to connect the company’s financing activities with its wider shipping decarbonisation strategy.

According to IINO Lines, it is aligned with the Climate Transition Finance Handbook and Climate Transition Bond Guidelines published by the International Capital Market Association (ICMA).

It also follows Japan’s Basic Guidelines on Climate Transition Finance, developed by the Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Ministry of the Environment.

The framework has received a Second-Party Opinion from DNV Business Assurance Japan K.K., an independent assessment provider.

DNV confirmed that the framework is consistent with the relevant transition finance guidance.

This external assessment relates to the framework’s alignment with the specified guidelines and should not be interpreted as independent verification of the vessel’s future emissions performance.

The financing arrangement demonstrates how IINO Lines is using its transition finance framework to support investment in its shipping fleet.

## Decarbonisation strategy targets 2050

The IINO Lines transition loan is also connected to the company’s medium-term management plan, Transformation for a Sustainable Future, covering fiscal years 2026 to 2030.

Under this plan, IINO Lines has established a target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Decarbonisation is identified as one of the company’s principal strategic priorities, with investment in lower-carbon dual-fuel vessels forming part of its shipping-related initiatives.

The acquisition of LUMI AURORA represents one of the projects being supported through this approach.

Mizuho Bank’s participation also reflects the wider Mizuho Financial Group’s involvement in financing corporate transition projects.

The financial group has outlined plans to support industrial decarbonisation through financing and services drawing on its sector expertise.

Neither IINO Lines nor Mizuho Bank disclosed whether additional vessels will be financed through similar arrangements.

The latest agreement therefore centres on the acquisition of LUMI AURORA, linking vessel investment with IINO Lines’ established transition finance framework and longer-term emissions reduction objectives.
