Marine automation specialist Høglund, now part of ABB, has secured a contract to upgrade the automation system aboard Holland America Line’s *Eurodam*, extending its retrofit activities in the cruise sector.

The contract was awarded in August 2026, with the installation scheduled to take place in the Bahamas in March 2027. The project will be Høglund’s third automation retrofit for Holland America Line, following previously completed upgrades aboard *Oosterdam* and *Zuiderdam*.

Built in 2008, *Eurodam* belongs to Holland America Line’s Signature class and is larger than the two earlier vessels, which belong to the Vista class. Høglund describes the upcoming installation as its largest cruise vessel retrofit to date.

The new automation system will feature 20% more input/output (I/O) points than the systems installed on the previous two ships. It will also include a customised videowall providing the crew with real-time oversight of technical operations and Høglund’s PLAYBACK functionality, which uses historical operating data to support troubleshooting.

### Upgrade designed for continuity of shipboard operations

Høglund plans to install the new automation system alongside the vessel’s existing equipment, allowing control of technical functions to be transferred progressively during the retrofit.

The approach draws on experience from the *Oosterdam* and *Zuiderdam* projects, where the company completed complex automation upgrades while the vessels remained powered.

Lene Ulseth-Rivelsrud, Project Manager at Høglund, said the company would apply experience gained from the earlier projects to the larger and more complex *Eurodam* installation.

The project also follows ABB’s acquisition of Høglund, which was completed on 1 September 2026 after the transaction was announced in June.

The acquisition brought Høglund’s marine automation and digital systems activities into ABB’s portfolio, while the *Eurodam* contract adds another vessel to its cruise retrofit programme.

The financial value of the contract has not been disclosed, and the company has not specified the duration of the planned installation in March 2027.
