Fugro has secured a contract from German transmission system operator 50Hertz to provide unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey, identification and clearance services for the LanWin3 and LanWin6 offshore grid connection projects in the German North Sea.

The work will support preparations for installing high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cables connecting offshore wind generation to Germany’s electricity network. Each grid connection is designed to transmit up to 2 GW of power, providing a combined planned transmission capacity of 4 GW.

The contract covers the identification of potential hazards along the proposed cable routes, followed by further investigation and clearance activities where necessary. The financial value of the agreement was not disclosed.

## Offshore surveys scheduled to begin in 2027

Fugro is scheduled to begin the initial UXO survey campaign in the second quarter of 2027, examining corridors measuring 200 metres in width along the two cable routes.

The company will deploy two Geowing magnetic gradiometer systems, each equipped with ten magnetic sensors, to detect potential unexploded ordnance and other objects located on or beneath the seabed.

Data collected during the survey will be used to map potential hazards and prepare a master target list for subsequent investigation.

Follow-up inspection and identification activities are planned for 2028, using remotely operated vehicles and specialised detection equipment to examine selected targets. The work will also include debris removal where required and support for the safe disposal of any confirmed unexploded ordnance in accordance with applicable regulations.

Ronny Bøhn, Fugro’s Director of Marine Geophysics for Europe and Africa, said the initial surveys would help 50Hertz better understand potential seabed hazards and plan the subsequent stages of cable installation.

The LanWin3 and LanWin6 projects form part of Germany’s ongoing development of offshore electricity transmission infrastructure. Fugro’s contracted work will focus on preparing the cable corridors for safe installation rather than the installation of the cables themselves.
