The Italian shipbuilding group is accelerating the deployment of advanced manufacturing technologies through its BOOST² industrial innovation programme.

Fincantieri is advancing the integration of robotics, artificial intelligence and automation technologies across its shipbuilding operations as part of its ongoing BOOST² industrial innovation programme.

The Italian shipbuilding group presented the latest developments of the initiative at its Castellammare di Stabia shipyard in October 2026, demonstrating technologies already in operation alongside systems undergoing validation and further development.

Launched three years ago, BOOST² – The Shipyard of the Future aims to introduce advanced manufacturing technologies into shipyard production processes, with planned investments of nearly €100 million under the company’s Industrial Plan.

The programme has involved more than 450 employees across 13 shipyards in Italy and internationally, including facilities in Romania and the United States.

## Robotics and Physical AI enter shipbuilding processes

The initiative focuses on the development and integration of technologies intended to improve production efficiency, workplace safety and manufacturing quality.

Among the principal areas of development are Physical AI systems, which combine artificial intelligence with technologies capable of interacting with physical environments, and collaborative robotics designed to assist workers with complex industrial tasks.

The programme also includes Digital Twin technologies for managing shipyard assets and production processes, alongside smart supply chain systems, additive manufacturing and automated industrial equipment.

According to Fincantieri, the initiative has moved beyond its initial phase of identifying and testing technologies and is now concentrating on their integration into operational workflows.

However, the company distinguishes between solutions already deployed, technologies undergoing validation and applications intended for future implementation.

## Programme targets wider industrial deployment

Fincantieri is working with technology partners, including small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups, to develop applications suited to shipbuilding requirements.

The company is also involving production teams directly in testing and evaluating new systems, with the aim of adapting technologies to different shipyard environments.

Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Fincantieri, said the next phase of the programme would focus on expanding the industrial application of technologies already introduced.

The company intends to strengthen the connection between ship design, production planning and manufacturing through the progressive adoption of digital and automated systems.

The programme’s investment allocation covers its broader industrial innovation activities rather than a single technology or shipyard.

Fincantieri has not disclosed a detailed breakdown of the planned expenditure or quantified productivity improvements attributable to the technologies presented.
